What is a single sign-on?
Single sign-on (SSO) is a robust and highly secure login service that allows you to log in to most IET websites using a single account.
The IET’s SSO system is built on standard Microsoft technology which is regularly updated, in line with industry best practice, to improve performance and mitigate security threats.
When you register to create your SSO account, you have the option of using an external service (Google, Facebook or Volunteer Office 365) for authentication, so you will not need to create a separate password with the IET. Alternatively, you can opt to log in using your email address and a password (which must conform to the IET’s security requirements).
For IET colleagues only: Once you have registered your account, please raise a ticket with the IT Service Desk asking to be included in the staff group.
What are the benefits of single sign-on?
Users have a choice of login options, which include the use of email address or social accounts (Office 365, Facebook and Google.
IET members can also opt for two-factor authentication, which will provide an additional layer of security for their IET account.
A self-service portal enables you to manage your email address, social login option, two-factor authentication and password.
As well as our main website at 6q87.738628.com, you will also be able to use your account to access other IET platforms including: ADAMS, Career Manager, the Digital Library, Education, Electrical, Events, IET EngX, IET.tv, Inspec Direct, and the Professional Registration Review Process System (RPS).
Please note that certain IET systems used by volunteers, including Adestra, Event webform, Plus! For Events, OpenWater and the Marketing toolkit, are not currently included and require separate login accounts.
I'm having trouble logging in to my account
You must log in using the same method you chose when you registered.
If you opted to log in using your email address and a password, you can reset your password if you need to. Click on the “Forgot your password?” link in the login form and follow the instructions given.
If you chose to use a social media account (Facebook, Google or Office 365), please check that you are logged in to your chosen account on the third-party site, then select the appropriate option in the IET login form.
Since we launched our current SSO (single sign-on) system in June 2019, your username must be an email address to which you have access.
If you’ve not logged in since this change, you’ll need to register with the new system. If you’re an IET member, please register using your IET membership number: follow the links to “register using membership number” or see the instructions below.
I’ve lost access to my email account or phone number. What should I do?
Our Membership Services team will be able to help you regain control of your IET account They will need to ask you some security questions to confirm your identity.
I’ve forgotten my password. What should I do?
Follow the link labelled “Forgot your password?” above the password field in the login form.
You'll be asked to enter your email address, and then enter the verification code sent to that address, before you can update your password.
We require complex passwords (minimum 12 characters, including a mix of letters, numbers and special characters) in line with recommendations from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, to help protect your personal information.
I'm trying to reset my password, but my email address is not recognised
Could you have registered with a different email address? Or did you register using a third-party account (Facebook, Google or Office 365)? Please check these options before contacting us. You must always log in to your account in the same way (either with email and password or using your third-party account).
Your account will have lapsed if you haven't logged in since 19th June 2019. In this case, you'll need to register again. If you're an IET member, please register using your IET membership number. This will allow you to securely access your member record (all of your existing preferences and permissions will be maintained). Follow the links to "register using membership number".
I’m an IET member, but I can’t see my membership record when logged in
This is most likely because you are logged in with a non-member account. It may be that you have registered more than one account.
If you can’t access your membership record (via MyIET) when logged in, please contact our Membership Services team. You’ll need to answer some security questions to confirm your identity; please have your IET membership number to hand.
How do I contact the IET about problems with logging in?
Please contact our Membership Services team. You’ll need to answer some security questions to confirm your identity; if you're an IET member, please have your IET membership number to hand.
I need to register (create an account)
If you don’t have an account, you’ll need to register if you want to join the IET, book to attend one of our events, contribute to a discussion or buy a book on our website.
To begin, click on the Register button on the start page at 6q87.738628.com/login
If you’re already an IET member, please follow the link to register with your membership number. This will allow you to access details of your membership once logged in. You’ll need to enter your membership number, surname and date of birth, to link your account to your member record.
You’ll next need to choose how you want to log in to your new account.
- If you choose to log in using your email address, we’ll send you a verification code which you must enter to confirm that you own that address.
- Once you have verified your email address (so long as that address is not already registered), you can add a password which you will use whenever you log in to your IET account.
- IET members will also have the option to enable two-factor authentication for extra security (see below for more details); this is not mandatory and can be skipped.
- You can choose instead to use an existing social media account (Facebook, Google or Office365) to log in to the IET. Select your preferred option and log in on the third-party site to continue your registration.
After confirming your chosen login method, you will be asked to provide your name and consent to marketing communications (members skip this step, as we already hold this information).
This completes your registration; click the Continue button on the confirmation page to return to the IET website.
I’ve submitted my email address, but didn’t receive the verification code
Please check the Spam or Junk folder in your email client. You can also request another code (click the “Send new code” button).
I’m trying to register, but I see the error message “You are already registered”
This message will be displayed if the system finds an existing account matching either your IET membership number, or the email address you have entered.
If you have entered your IET membership number and see the message “You are already registered”, please do not attempt to create a new account. If you cannot retrieve your login details (see above), please contact the Membership Services team.
If you are a non-member with an existing account, you must log in using the option you chose when you registered (either email address and password, or using a third-party account - Facebook, Google or Office 365). See above for help with logging in.
What social media accounts can I use to log in?
When registering your account, you can choose to use either your Facebook, Google or Office 365 account to log in to the IET. You must then use your chosen method every time you log in (if you need to change this in future, you can do so only by contacting us – see below).
We have chosen Facebook and Google as they are the most popular social media platforms.
I don’t have a social media account. What do I do?
You can register with an email address and password.
Can I set up more than one way of logging in to my account?
No, once your preferred method of logging in has been set up, in future this will be the way that you will access your IET account. If you need to change this for any reason, please contact the Membership Services team.
I am a member with a Volunteer Office 365 account, which has two-factor authentication already enabled. Do I need to set two-factor authentication for my IET account as well?
If you are an IET volunteer with a Volunteer Office 365 account, we recommend you choose this as your preferred method of logging in when registering your account. You don’t need to choose two-factor authentication as this is already enabled as part of your Volunteer Office 365 login.
I registered with my IET Volunteer Office 365 account but I no longer have access to this account. What do I do?
Please contact the Membership Services team who will be able to help.
I am not a volunteer but I have my own Office 365 account. Can I use this to log in to my IET account?
Yes. Simply select Office 365 as your login method when registering.
What is two-factor authentication?
Also called multi-factor authentication (MFA) or two-step authentication, two-factor authentication is an additional, opt-in service for IET members only, which provides an extra layer of security for your account. When you log into your account, a one-time verification code is generated and sent to your mobile number, which you must then enter to complete the login process.
Two-factor authentication is entirely optional for IET members: it can be set up when you register, or subsequently via MyIET at 6q87.738628.com/my (select the “MyDetails” tab and follow the link to “Edit Login Details”).
I’d like to set up two-factor authentication, but I don’t have a mobile phone.
Two-factor authentication can also be set up using a preferred telephone number, so you can receive your verification code by telephone call.
If I’m using single sign on, will the system keep me logged in?
Your login session will automatically expire after one hour of inactivity.
What happens to my personal data?
If you opt to use your Facebook or Google account to verify your user details, some information is passed from the login provider to the IET (you are prompted when this happens). The IET does not send any data to the login provider, who only knows that the user has linked their identity to an IET account.
If you’ve chosen to opt in for two-factor authentication, we will request the minimum amount of data (name, email address and a mobile or telephone number for your one-time passcode to be sent to) solely for the purpose of providing you with two-factor authentication
The number you provide will be stored in our system as part of the single sign on process for two-factor authentication.
In line with GDPR requirements, no personal details used to register on the system will be used for marketing purposes. Please be aware that the SSO system will not update your email address for communications from the IET if you change the email address you use to log in. This information is only used to provide you with a secure login to our websites. If you change your email address for login, please remember to also update your contact information in MyIET.
How do I update my details?
To update your personal details with us, please visit MyIET at 6q87.738628.com/my
Here you can also manage your login credentials (email address and password) and multi-factor authentication (IET members only): select the “MyDetails” tab and follow the link to “Edit Login Details”.
If you change your email address for login, please remember to also update your contact information in MyIET (unless you wish to maintain separate email addresses for login and IET communications).
